Holding a teacher council

From the Stake Sunday School Presidency

Teacher councils now meet every month, and each one is 25 minutes. That is a lot less time than before, so we put what the handbook asks in one place, with an outline you can use. None of this adds to what you already do.

When and who

Each council meets once a month during one of the 25-minute class times. Relief Society, Young Women and priesthood quorum teachers and leaders meet while Sunday School is going on. Sunday School teachers meet in the second hour, during Relief Society, Young Women and quorum meetings. The two councils can meet on the same Sunday or on different ones.

A member of your Sunday School presidency usually leads, under the direction of the ward council. Primary teachers can join these councils or meet another way. The Primary presidency works that out with a member of the bishopric, and the Sunday School president helps if they ask.

A 25-minute outline

The Sunday School General Presidency suggests spending most of the time on one teaching principle, with a few minutes at the start for sharing and a few at the end for making a plan. This is how we would split it.

  1. About 5 minutes. Ask what went well in class this month, or what was hard. Let teachers answer each other before you step in.
  2. About 15 minutes. Take one principle from Teaching in the Savior's Way. Read a short part together and talk about what it looks like in a real class. Then have everyone try it, like writing a question for next week's lesson or planning how to open class.
  3. About 5 minutes. Each teacher picks one thing to try before the next council. Next month, start by asking how it went.

Start on time. With 25 minutes, five late minutes is a fifth of the council.

Choosing what to talk about

Pick from what your teachers need. The handbook has the ward council and the Sunday School president decide that together, so bring it up in ward council once in a while. The easiest source is your teachers. At the end of each council, ask what they'd like help with next time.

Teaching in the Savior's Way is the main resource. It is built around focusing on Jesus Christ and four principles:

Its personal evaluation for teachers, near the back of the book, makes a good first council of the year.

Getting teachers there

Scheduling the whole year at once does most of the work. Once your dates are saved, your ward page gives you a link to text your teachers. They tap it once and every council goes on their calendar. If you move a date later, their calendar moves with it.

Ask the Relief Society, elders quorum and Young Women presidencies to encourage their teachers to come. A personal invitation still works best, especially for someone who was just called.

When we visit

One of us will try to come to each council. We're there to listen and to help where you want it. We won't take over the meeting, and we aren't there to grade anyone. Your ward page shows which of us plans to come.

A few days before each council we'll email your presidency to check it's still on. If a Sunday changes, use that email or your ward page.

Councils for parents

The ward council may also hold teacher councils for parents, in one of the 25-minute class times, as often as they're needed. They work well for parents in a similar spot, like parents of children getting ready for baptism or a mission. The same outline works.

Where to read more

Some older Church pages, including the teacher council chapter of Teaching in the Savior's Way, still say quarterly and 50 minutes. The handbook and the First Presidency letter below have the current schedule.
